We purchased this planter for a sheltered ourdoor entryway & planted a fern in it. The self-watering feature was especially appealing to us because of our hot summers & our travel. The planter is very well designed & wasn't difficult to assemble. We do recommend not filling the planter with potting soil until you've placed it in the location where it will be.

Purchased two shorter versions for my container-sized blueberry plants. The depth that is listed is for the entire planter but there is a shelf where the wicking tubes are so the depth is actually about 2/3 of the size stated. Needless to say the blueberries did not fit. Now have a small hydrangea. They look nice but did not fit my needs. My husband put them together and said the the instructions were not easy to follow.

These planters are even cooler in person than they look in the photos in the magazine and online. Everyone that has been to my house since I put these on my deck has complimented on how much they love them. They are not hard to put together (contrary to other reviews I read). Right now I have a tall grass and a mum in each planter, but I think these are going to look great no matter what I plant in them. The section where the dirt and plants go is rather deep, so worked great for the bigger things I put in there for the fall, but will need to water from the top next spring when I put smaller annuals in them to get them established.

People over-love their plants with water or under-love-them. The wicking system of this planter (also available on a kitchen unit) is perfect but the best part is the indicator. There is tube to the water below that indicates if the planter needs water by a red needle - all the way at the top - no water. Down toward the bottom - add water. And you add it thru the tube. Here's a quest to Gardeners Supply, please retrofit all the raised cedar beds so we can purchase this same system to use with them!!!!

I was very disappointed in this planter. Some assembly required really means the whole thing comes in pieces. Also very disappointed in customer service. It cost me $40 to send it back and when I contacted customer service, their response was "too bad." The clerk asked if there was something wrong with the planter. Implied message "or is there just something wrong with you." Very disappointing experience.

Comments about : Galvanized Self-Watering Planter Square, Short:

I bought both of the sizes and love them not only because of the design and looks but they are well made and sturdy as well. Plus they have a water reservoir which makes it much easier since I can't get automatic sprinklers to them. My only criticism is the assembly directions are incomplete and not that well written and when I called to try and clarify a couple of things the staff really didn't understand what was to be done with a couple of parts and hadn't put the planters together themselves so they didn't know the answers. They also found the directions didn't explain that well.
