Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder Saves Seeds for the Birds

  • Prevent squirrels from pilfering birdseed
  • Rich candy-apple red feeder is lovely in the landscape
  • Uses a weight-sensitive perch to close access to seed

The ingenious design of this cheery red bird feeder allows your winged friends to dine in comfort. When a squirrel tries to get to the seed, however, its heavier weight triggers the spring-operated perch, closing access to the seed. You can even adjust the weight setting to discourage large birds, saving seeds for smaller songbirds. An easy-open, tamper-proof latch provides you easy access for filling, but foils hungry squirrels.

  • Powder-coated steel
  • 14-1/4" L x 12" W x 7-3/4" H
  • Holds 9 lbs. of seed
  • Includes mounting bracket and metal hanger

We have many (clever!) squirrels requiring baffled feeder poles. I bought this to hand from an un-baffled shepherd's hook and of course the squirrels went to it immediately. Try as they might, they were not successful at stealing the bird seed and usually just slid off the roof. This is a very sturdy feeder. I've seen tbe smaller birds (chicadees, finches, titmice, nuthatches) using it but not the larger birds like bluejays or cardinals--making it a safe place for the smaller birds. It took me a little while to get to the instructions for assembly. It's a little awkward to fill as working the latch with winter-cold fingers was a little challenging for my "older, arthritic" fingers. It's nice that the feeder has parts that allow it to be attached to the top of a pole as well as being hung by the handle provided. The handle is also very strong--not just flimsy wire. Good product!

Hopper holds enough seed so that I only have to fill it every few days even with frequent visits by the birds.

I currently hang the smaller version of this feeder in a spot to which the squirrels can jump, replacing a tube feeder, which the squirrels had been depleting. A squirrel showed up the second day this feeder was installed. He made the leap from the deck rail and scrambled all around, looking for purchase in a spot that would allow him access to the seed. No luck. He came back later with a buddy; no dice. Now the squirrels show up, it seems, just to see if the birds have dropped some seed for them. More photos available.

I have owned a feeder like this for 15 years. The old one had a wood perch bar. I don't have it mounted on a pole, but on the top of the deck railing, and the racoons finally broke the wooden perch. I've looked for a long time and finally found the same feeder except it is inproved by having a metal perch. I'm so glad to find this same feeder with all metal construction.

I use this product to keep grackles from gobbling up all the feed in the feeder. It works because of the adjustable feed bar. I love it.
