Just what I needed for my carrots

    By Catherine

    Pros

    • Easy to store
    • Easy to use

    Cons

      Best Uses

      • Insect protection

I wanted a cover for my carrots as I thinned them out - to prevent carrot fly from damaging my plants. This was easy to put over my containers and protect them and the hoops kept the netting from laying flat on the plants.

      Best Uses

      • Keeps Cabbage Moths Off

I found the hooped netting very easy to set up. The biggest plus is that I don't like to use chemicals to keep insects off my veggies if I don't have to. I was having problems getting my cabbage plant to grow well because the cabbage worms were eating most of my plants. Now with using the netting they are growing well. Yeah--I finally will have beautiful cabbages for the first time in two year.

        • Block Squash Vine Borer

It's early in the season. We're hoping to stop squash vine borers from attacking our zukes and summer squash. We may need a larger hoop system - this is our first try. If it contains the plants ok it should work great!

I am using this to keep insects, squirrels and a woodchuck from devouring my fall crop of lettuce, greens and kohlrabi. With bricks holding the edges down, the squirrels are so far ignoring it and vegetables are thriving. Water penetrates the mesh easily.

Won't use this until next season, so too early to tell whether or not it is effective or how it will fit in my raised bed. Folds relatively flat, but still seems bulky for storage.

                    Best Uses

I installed the first tunnel a week ago; since it's still early in the season I'm not sure if it will completely exclude insects, but it looks like it will. I liked it so much I ordered 5 more, and have installed them side-by-side, two per raised bed. My beds are either 8 or 12 feet long by 4 feet wide, so I would have preferred the tunnel to be the correct length for the beds rather than 9 feet 8 inches, which maybe corresponds to a standard metric dimension. Also note that they are meant to be installed at a fixed width, so if, like me, you compress them to fit a 2 foot wide space, you will have extra fabric bunching up at the front and rear ends, and then you have to find a way to seal off the extra fabric to leave bugs no way to get in. But they are very sturdy and I expect they are going to be the answer to my annual losses to the insect kingdom.
