Easy way to grow

By Sher0462

from Pine Bluff, AR

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Perfect size
  • Strong material

Cons

  • could use handles

Best Uses

  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Corn

For potatoes, just follow directions on the bag. For corn, fill bags about 3/4 full with container potting soil, put down seeds and cover with more soil to recommended depth on seed packet. Easy to fertilize and water. A little hard to move, if necessary, without handles.

Awesome

We bought this so my 80+ yr old Mom could enjoy a bigger yield on her little patio instead of just the usual tomato & pepper plant that she would buy. WOW - we dumped the bag out into a trough at harvest time and she pulled out at least 12 lbs of potatoes -from 7 inches long to little 4 inchers. Definately buying a few more of the grow bags for 2015.

Fresh Potatoes a Snap

By Organic Gardener

from Michigan

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Clean Potatoes
  • Deck Or Patio Possibility
  • Durable construction
  • Ease of Use
  • Flat storage
  • Oldster Compliant
  • Space-saving
  • Tidy System
  • Youngster Compliant

Cons

  • Expense
  • Need For Container Soil
  • Yearly Refill With Soil

Best Uses

  • Children
  • Confined Garden Space
  • Elderly
  • Small family

Fresh harvested potatoes are a snappy crisp treat that cannot be equaled by any potato you've ever bought. I planted 2 of the larger purple bags this summer with fewer than 1 pound of organic potatoes that I ordered. My yield was 5 lbs and 5.5 lbs per bag of the cleanest most blemish-free nice-sized vegetables I've ever grown, just dumped over onto a tarp so I could save the clean soil.

My reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is having to buy 3-4 bags of organic container soil. I will re-use the soil but I'll have to store it over winter. I also bought an organic dry fertilizer because the potatoes are not getting any nutrients from the earth.

The system is so easy to use. No bending and digging in dirty soil! It was true this year that while the rest of my community garden was picking off potato bugs, my raised bags in the corners of my plot got none and the leaves were healthy. I wanted potatoes but didn't have the space left in my plot so the bags were perfect vertical space.

The bags did not require water everyday like I thought they would, just two or three times per week in Michigan. I even forgot to water for a week. The bags are very thick and well stiched, and the bottom resting on the soil is still in great shape.

Be sure to wait until every leaf is dead before dumping the bags to get max yield and bigger potatoes.

Disappointing

I have been vegetable gardening for 6 years nows, and since I have a large thriving varied vegetable garden I reckon I can claim a bit of green thumb. After 2 full seasons of use I can firmly say that I am didsppointed with the results of the potato grow bags. I have raised beds and bags and have grown potatoes in both. I have consistlently harvested a very very small crop from these bags now. I use the same soil and treatment as with the raised beds (incl. watching the water levels). The photo below shows a harvest from both a regular and a jumbo sized potato bag. The plants in both bags died down more than a week prior to harvesting so no additional growth was likely. The raised bed potatoes have had much larger quantity and size. I had thought I had put too many in the first year so I placed the suggested amount in this year to make sure to give them space for growth. It didn't help. I can only suggest these if you have no other space for potatoes and for fun only and not real sustenance. I will try it again next year with a fertilizer to see if that helps but at this point the havest has not even paid for the soil mix I put in it. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

I have used these for years and it is so much easier than growing potatoes in my garden. And it is great fun to see how many potatoes I have to enjoy.

      Good for any root crops

      By KLP

      from Matteson (Chicagoland), IL

      Verified Buyer

      Pros

      • Durable
      • Easy to use
      • Harvesting Is Easy
      • Light

      Cons

      • Plants Tend To Dry Sooner
      • Two Person To Fill

      Best Uses

      • Root crops

I use these for root crops. This year I'm using them for beets (my wife's request) and carrots (my preference). I once left then out through the winter with no noticable damage. It does not hurt to have another pair of hands to fill it. Also, if you have a wet fall, they can be difficult to empty when you're done with them. You need to water them more often than in the ground.
I like the ease of harvesting--shoveling into a filter is an option.
