An Ancient Seed-Planting Tradition Lives Again

  • Traditional and effective way to sow wildflowers Hummingbird Seed Balls contain larkspur, Shasta daisies, scarlet sage, and 20 other flowers preferred by hummingbirds
  • Wildflower Seed Balls contain bluebells, black-eyed Susans, Indian blanket and 21 more
  • Each package contains 16 seed balls

When Native Americans sowed their crops, they didn’t use tractors or plows. To keep valuable seed from blowing away or being eaten by birds, they often hid it inside little balls of clay. The same method works well today: just scatter these seed balls on prepared soil and water well. Handmade in the USA by a company that employs persons with disabilities. Seeds will germinate in 7 to 30 days after planting.

  • Plant in spring after all danger of frost
  • Seed balls can be stored in a dry, cool place for up to 3 years before planting
  • Hummingbird seed balls include: purple coneflower, tickseed, cornflower, rocket larkspur, blanketflower, Indian blanket, drummond phlox, scarlet sage, candytuft, yellow cosmos, sweet William, cosmos, wallflower, lemon mint, moss verbena, standing cypress, black-eyed Susan, Shasta daisy, plains coreopsis, butterfly weed, sweet alyssum, toadflax
  • Wildflower seed balls include: arroyo lupine, California poppy, scarlet flax, blue flax, five spot, baby blue eyes, Indian blanket, Shasta daisy, tickseed, rocket larkspur, African daisy, cornflower, wall flower, dame's rocket, black-eyed Susan, California bluebells, bird's eye, Plains coreopsis, tidy-tips, corn poppy, farewell-to-spring, catchfly, toadflax, evening primrose, yarrow
  • Each ball contains 20-30 seeds
  • Coverage is 1 square foot per ball
  • Suitable for hardiness zones 4-10
  • Place in full sun, keep moist

    Comments about Flower Seed Balls:

I followed the instructions that came with these seed balls to the letter. Still, after putting them out in my improved garden areas, watering them, getting full sun and sufficient rainfall, 60 days later I have yet to see the first sprout. I will wait another month and if I have even some flowers, I will update this rating.

I had read about seed balls and liked the idea.
We followed directions and waited..only a few cosmos and some babys breath resulted.
      Very disappointed.

        Comments about Flower Seed Balls:

This product came packaged in beautiful little burlap bags that I am displaying in my garden room. Neat conversation piece as many my age remember when this was a practice for saving seeds. The seed balls are in a plastic bag inside the burlap so no dust or muss. I love them.

            Comments about Flower Seed Balls:

I gave one bag of seed balls to a friend for Christmas and have one bag for my own use. I am hoping the results for both of us will be to attract more birds to our gardens, as well as to enjoy the colorful flower varieties for show. Once the perennials are established, they should provide visual delight for many years to come. It was interesting to read in the flower description that the native Americans have been planting this way for ages - how creative!

As I got these in the late fall/earlywinter, we'll have to wait on Mother Nature and the seed balls "doing their thing" in being fragrant, hardy and healthy.

I bought these packets as Christmas gifts for other people. When they arrived, I couldn't give them away. I just needed them. We have a large lawn that I mow. We decided to convert a portion to field. I cannot wait to throw these flower balls in the field and see what grows. Thank you.
