Nice design, but difficult to use with bags

By Chauncey Gardener

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

We bought it to replace our old ceramic compost crock. The problem with this one is the design (which we should have realized before buying it): if you use a bag, it's almost impossible to get it out through the narrow top. And putting things in without a bag makes cleaning difficult. We therefore opted for a metal crock.

Cute But Not So User-friendly

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

I use this on my kitchen counter to collect scraps for compost. I love its farmhouse look but get frustrated every time I try to pull out the liner bag when it's full. Because of the smaller "neck" opening, the compost gets stuck & rips the bag as I work to pull it out. I'm trying to figure out how to make it work (don't fill it full so it can collapse & come through the opening flatter?) but I may have to return it for a more "user friendly" compost container. I suppose if I didn't use the liners it would work fine, but then I'd have to wash it out every time I empty it. I love the liners!

Too big for my counter top. Disappointed

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

Too big and bulky for my counter, Thinking about turning it into a planter for outside. Not as attractive as I expected. Wish I would have ordered the smaller prettier one.

  • Like To Rustic Look

Cons

  • Emptying Is Difficult
  • Narrow Top Keeps Scraps

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

We like the rustic look in our Log Home, but the narrow top makes emptying difficult. Another time, we'll go with a better design.

    not so sturdy

    Pros

    • Big enough

    Cons

    • Lid Doesn't Fit Right

    Best Uses

    • Easy To Store Under Sink

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

I wanted something big enough but not so large to fit under the sink. It does and easy to carry outside to compost bin. BUT, the lid doesn't fit well and when I tried to press it on the handle almost went flat but for the fingers inside it. So, the lid fits not fully on the top. I do have to pull items out from the container as well.

    Just Perfect!

    By Paul

    from Fair Haven, VT

    Verified Buyer

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

This compost bucket is ideal for my 1840s VT farmhouse - looks great in the kitchen. It's a decent size, but I still find myself emptying it more often than I would like.

As mentioned before, the neck is a bit narrow so I try to tear up larger pieces before putting in - but it's not that much of a hassle (though I supposed it could be if you use compost bags).

The first one that arrived had horrible attempts at making it look "rustic" - lots of smeared black paint, but Gardener's sent out a replacement right away.

    Pros

    • Easy to clean
    • Holds a lot

    Cons

    • Bag Slips Inside
    • Hard to empty
    • Industrial Appeasrasnce
    • Neck too narrow

    Best Uses

    • Composting kitchen waste

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

The narrow neck precludes easily removing the bag to empty out the kitchen waste. The container is so deep, the bag slips down inside it unless held in place with a rubber band.

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

I use this pail to collect vegetable scraps for my chickens and it is perfect. I have gotten a lot of compliments on this pail. It fits perfectly on the kitchen counter and can hold a lot of scraps. The lid can be hard to remove sometimes but most of the time it is easy.

    Farmhouse Compost Pail

    By Lynn the composter

    from Wisconsin

    Verified Buyer

Comments about : Farmhouse Compost Pail:

The Farmhouse milk can compost pail is quaint but not practical due to the poor design. The neck, being smaller than the body, makes it virtually impossible to remove the filled compost bag. Ideally, the entire top of the body should be able to be removed for easier emptying. I'm glad I kept my old compost bucket.
