Crop Cage has Helped!

By Upstate Gardener

from Upstate NY

Pros

  • Protective
  • Sturdy In Storms

Cons

  • Brittle Pipe-joins
  • Needs 10 Earth Staples
  • Needs more ties

Best Uses

We installed this crop-cage over our two, young blueberry bushes after they set their berries. They are flourishing!
As we constructed it, One of the corners broke - it is a brittle plastic, but we glued it back together & put a zip-tie on it. Since we installed the cage over a 4x4 raised bed, we trimmed the pipes down an inch to fit inside the bed. Of course, then we had more fabric. Even then, the mesh could use more ties at the bottom.
I did have a squirrel get inside one day, but unzipped it a bit and he got out.
I'd recommend it to others & suggest you buy 2 sets of earth staples to "seal" the bottom edge.

This berry cage does the trick and it looks nice in the yard. I still need to find a spare 5 minutes to build the second one I bought, but I'm pleased with this product so far. I love that it is a temporary structure and that once the berries are picked I can pull it down and store it for the rest of the summer. Now we don't have to sacra ice our berries to the birds and the chipmunks. The zippered door makes it easy to access the fruit. Would highly recommend!

I am using these covers for planter boxes I have on my patio that have vegetables in them. They were pretty easy to assemble and work very well. One big problem was they kept tipping over in the wind. I made myself some sand bags and put them on the base rods, this solved the problem. It would be helpful if you offered something like sand bags to hold the covers in place.

I purchased this to cover my Gronomics raised planter. It was quick and easy to put together. The 4x4 size was a snug fit for my size planter. I used a rubber mallet to gently tap the tubes in place. It seems strong enough to hold up to a regular storm.
It is let's sun and water in and so far keeps the pests out. Glad I bought it.

I bought this cage not knowing the frame was made of plastic or similar material. Put it up around a 4X4 raised bed to keep out small and large wild critters. We went away for a few days during which there were high winds and came home to find it collapsed. When I went to reassemble it, I found that many of the 3 ways connectors were just snapped in two. I tried to tape these back together without success as other connectors and ends of rods broke as well.

The concept of these cages is great! I purchased four of the 4x4 cages and within 4 days the corner plastic pieces all broke. We didn't have any wind or storms but they broke anyway. One of the corners broke just putting them together. My husband and I made wooden corners by drilling holes into blocks of wood and sanding the edges so they wouldn't rip the netting and they are working great. Also, the ties that are there to tie around the tubing at the bottom of the cages is tedious. These should be made out of velcro to save time. Now that they are up with the wooden corners, they are fantastic! It's great to just unzip the front and walk in to pick the berries.

I purchased one cage in the fall. The metal structure pieces fit well into the corners. However, the netting didn't fit well over the structure and the ties on the bottom weren't long enough to secure to the bottom poles.
The item I purchased this spring had the exact opposite problem. The pole structure didn't fit into the corner pieces, but the netting fit beautifully and the ties were much better. In this purchase the corner pieces cracked and I had to secure them with duct tape.

I got this cage to enclose my blueberries because the birds love them as much as I do. I got the 4'x4' cage and corralled 2 blueberry bushes in there. The cage contains the plants nicely, the zip up door enables weeding and watering is easy.
It's even fairly sturdy with the addition of some earth staples.
I am very happy with this product and am considering purchasing another one.

                                          • If you're trying to keep birds from your crops, any scare device will work for a few days. But the most effective technique is exclusion.
                                          • Dreaming of a backyard berry patch? An asparagus bed? Start with a raised bed. A raised bed isolates the perennial crop from invasive weeds and grasses that might creep into the growing area. All have shallow roots that don't compete well with weeds and that can be damaged by aggressive weeding tools.
