Great concept but not for every climate.

By oldswoze

Pros

  • Easy to put together
  • Great size
  • Protects plants

Cons

  • Did Not Withstand Heat

Best Uses

  • Protect Tomato Plants

This crop cage is a brilliant idea. It protected my tomato plants from all the critters (including my dog) who love to chew on my tomatoes. The size (4x4) was perfect for my 3 large pots and the zipper opening made it easy to water and tend my plants. The cage, however, does not work in the desert as the heat and sun destroyed the corner pieces and is rotting the netting. Maybe if you made the cages with metal corner pieces instead of plastic then the product would work for those of us who live in the desert.

Works Great but Corners Don't Last

Pros

  • Easy To Install
  • Easy to take down
  • Keeps birds away

Cons

  • Corners Don't Last
  • Tie Downs Don't Last

Best Uses

  • Protect Crops From Birds

I've used 5 of these for the past two blueberry seasons. I usually put them up in early June before the berries ripen and take them down in July once the berries have been picked. They were relatively easy to put up, although two people are needed to put the netting over the frame. They worked great at preventing the birds from getting the berries and made it easy to enter and pick the berries.

My major complaint is the sturdiness. Some of the plastic corners broke after only 2 months of use. I took them down for the winter. This year almost all the corners broke. Also, the tie-downs that were most exposed to the sun have disintegrated. The zippers are getting hard to operate, but I think WD-40 should solve that problem. My guess is that the corners were not truly designed for continuous direct sun or the stress of the wind in a summer thunderstorm. I used electrical ties to hold several together to make them sturdier (when I bought these, the 4 X 8 version wasn't available). For next year I will put some metal fence stakes in on the outer corners for more support.

While I don't like having to incur additional expense to make something work, theses cages are much better than my prior solution. I will also say that Gardener's Supply was very helpful and has ordered new corners at no additional cost to me.

Works perfectly

Pros

  • Easy To Install
  • Easy to use
  • Effective

Cons

  • Cost
  • Must Install Correctly
  • Too Small For Some Bushes

Best Uses

  • Berry Bushes

Our berry bushes are hijacked by robins every year, and no matter how many berries grew, we would be lucky to get one or two for ourselves. This fruit cage has solved that problem. We bought one as a test, and the bush we used it on is covered with full, ripe berries. The set up is easy but you must make sure that all of the parts click together fully and that the netting is properly wrapped around the poles. It was easy to see how people who didn't set it up right might have had problems they described.

Once the cage is set up, it is a breeze. The zippered door gives fast, simple access and the berries are able to ripen fully.

The cage was a little pricey for covering only one bush. Also, it was too narrow and short to use on most of our tall blueberry bushes (Patriot, for the most part). We may cut back a few of the bushes to better accommodate the cage dimensions. The protection that this cage gives more than makes up for any reduction in bush size.

Crop Cage is Easy Gardening

By EarthyGardener

Pros

  • Good Value
  • Quick Set-up

Cons

    Best Uses

    • To Cover My Grow Bed

I bought this to cover my 3'x 3' Grow Bed. It works well. Set up was about 20 minutes, if that. Just follow the easy directions. I used Earth Staples to secure it to the ground because it can get windy in NJ at times. My only regret is that I didn't spring for the 4'x 8' size! Much easier than trying to erect deer netting.

I set the cages up, stapled them to the ground and have enjoyed blueberries all month long. The birds have been squawking because they can't have any. My dogs love to eat them off the ground.
The cages are easy to get into, I can stand up to my 6 ft. height, and the birds are locked out. What more can you ask for?
          Love the cages.

          • Enclosing Vegetable Bed

My daughter and I used this cage over a 4x4 raised cedar bed for vegetables. I had given up on ever growing vegetables again because of the growing deer population, but it seems I was wrong. With this cage, we are experiencing success. The green color makes it blend in with the rest of the yard, and even the neighbors don't mind the structure. It was a little flimsy, but we added driveway marking stakes to each corner to hold it in place, and have had no problems.

          Needs extra support

          Best Uses

          • Bird Deterrent

The netting works well. No birds on my blueberries. The support poles need help. A little electrical tape securing wooden tomato stakes to the frame poles pushed into the ground and it stands up to the wind without straining the plastic couplings. As delivered even anchored with suggested spikes the wind would break the couplings. I do think it is worth buying with the extra support.

          Best Uses

          • Blueberry bushes

I love this idea and it was easy to assemble. The plastic connectors are a bit flimsy as a few cracked just putting the cage together. Also, the ties could be a bit longer and it would be easier to tie. Other than these things, this is a great product.

          Crop Cage has Helped!

          By Upstate Gardener

          Verified Buyer

          Pros

          • Protective
          • Sturdy In Storms

          Cons

          • Brittle Pipe-joins
          • Needs 10 Earth Staples
          • Needs more ties

          Best Uses

We installed this crop-cage over our two, young blueberry bushes after they set their berries. They are flourishing!
As we constructed it, One of the corners broke - it is a brittle plastic, but we glued it back together & put a zip-tie on it. Since we installed the cage over a 4x4 raised bed, we trimmed the pipes down an inch to fit inside the bed. Of course, then we had more fabric. Even then, the mesh could use more ties at the bottom.
I did have a squirrel get inside one day, but unzipped it a bit and he got out.
I'd recommend it to others & suggest you buy 2 sets of earth staples to "seal" the bottom edge.

            • If you're trying to keep birds from your crops, any scare device will work for a few days. But the most effective technique is exclusion.
            • Dreaming of a backyard berry patch? An asparagus bed? Start with a raised bed. A raised bed isolates the perennial crop from invasive weeds and grasses that might creep into the growing area. All have shallow roots that don't compete well with weeds and that can be damaged by aggressive weeding tools.
