Additional Information

Biodegradable, Eco-Friendly Cowpots™ for Transplants

  • Completely biodegradable pots make seedstarting easy
  • Transplant seedlings, pot and all, directly into garden, reducing transplant shock
  • Pots add nutrients to the soil as they degrade

Plants thrive in these award-winning biodegradable transplant pots. Cowpots™ are the patent-pending invention of Matt and Ben Freund, two Connecticut dairy farmers who were looking for an environmentally responsible way to dispose of cow manure. The manure is dried, completely composted, mixed with natural fibers, and pressed into pots. Gardeners love Cowpots because they are odorless and free of weed seeds. Plants love Cowpots too, because transplant shock is greatly reduced. Best of all, Cowpots are 100% biodegradable. They last for months in the greenhouse or windowsill, but will dissolve within weeks after planting in the garden, providing essential organic nutrients. We are very excited about Cowpots, and recommend them to any gardener who wants to increase plant health and reduce waste.

I start all my vegetable plants in these pots and then simply plant them in the garden in their pots and watch them grow. Eliminates disturbing roots when planting and decompose to provide additional nutrients the plants can use. They do a great job and are environmentally better then using peat pots.

Comments about : 4" Cowpots, Set of 12:

Have been using the cow pots (various sizes) for about three years now. The plants (mainly tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers) grow very well in these and make transferal to larger growing pots or the garden very easy. It is best to put these in a tray and water from the bottom. My plants are raised under grow lights until I do the final planting. Using these pots has made final transfer, plus I have very little plant loss. The only thing to watch with these is to make sure you don't let the pots sit in too much water that cannot be easily absorbed because the pots will then rot or form mold.

Our garden team loved the cow pots because: the children could easily transplant our seedlings they grew under lights! On June 4, the garden team transplanted the plants in the outdoor Hope for Newport Community Garden with ease. The pots held up to water, were great to pick up and plant in the garden. these plants now have a head start to the season by having the manure nourish the plant. We will order these cow pots again. Thank you Gardener's Supply!

I think this is a great way to start seeds that don't like getting transplanted. They're cheaper then most peat pots and actually add nutrients to your garden soil as they decompose. Like all peat pots you need to make sure you bury the whole pot when you plant (or rip off the top portion), otherwise they wick water out of the soil. But its a really great use for manure.

I love that these are big enough to start my tomatoes extra early. I also love that they are directly planted, reducing shock and adding instant fertilizer for a really great start.

Comments about : 4" Cowpots, Set of 12:

Have used the cow pots for four planting seasons now. They are very sturdy and do not fall apart after even a month of watering under grow lights or on an outdoor stand. The plants seem to thrive in the pots and do develop really good root system. It is much easier to put the plants in their final planting with them in the cow pots. For anyone who has problems with their hands (i.e., arthritis, etc.), these pots make it so much easier to get the plants where they need to be without worrying about dropping them and/or breaking the plant if you have to tap them out of a plastic pot.

Wish these came in a smaller size such as a 2".
Having them in sets of 10 or 12 would be wonderful. That is a hint, GS!!

Have used these for the 2nd year for all my veggie transplants (grown from seed) - the plants love the extra food provided by the cowpots, making the roots grow right through the pot. When I see the roots come through, I know it's time to plant into the garden, pot and all, so no transplant shock! Love these, well worth the money.
