Comments about Chester Thornless Blackberries, 5 Canes:

Love the idea of thornless berries in my raised bed garden. Unfortunately only 2 of the 5 canes actually sprouted once planted. I have faithfully watered (on rain-free days) and have waited for over a month and yet only 2 have any leafage whatsoever. Just a bit disappointed in the heartiness of the canes and wonder if there will be anything next year.

We planted these canes two seasons ago..didn't really expect a crop last year. But still no berries this year and very little growth. We know it's not the conditions because other berries in the same patch had nice crops both years. I gave 1 star because the plants did live, but they have never thrived, bloomed, or borne fruit.

Thes canes arrived alive with some growth on them, but have not taken hold very well. There has been no new growth, but they are still alive. Time will tell.

The bushes were planted in potting soil near the fence, open sun, and well watered. They died. Every one of the blackberry canes croaked.

We are hoping to get berries out of the three that made it. When we got them in the mail we planted them right away. Don't know for sure what happend to the two that didn't make it.

Got them in the mail, didn't look to good. We decided to try them anyway. Two of the five died. We are still hoping to get berries from the remaing three.

                          Articles

                          • Berries and other so-called small fruits generally don't require as much space as full-size fruit trees, and by growing several different types, you can enjoy home-grown fruit from early summer through late fall.
                          • Dreaming of a backyard berry patch? An asparagus bed? Start with a raised bed. A raised bed isolates the perennial crop from invasive weeds and grasses that might creep into the growing area. All have shallow roots that don't compete well with weeds and that can be damaged by aggressive weeding tools.
                          • If you're trying to keep birds from your crops, any scare device will work for a few days. But the most effective technique is exclusion.
