Design Flaws

Pros

  • Can't Get Rust Holes
  • Filter Holds In Odors
  • Inconspicuous Black

Cons

  • Handle falls off
  • Heavy
  • Scratches Countertop

Best Uses

I bought this Crock for collecting my fruit and vegetable scraps in the kitchen, to then be carried to my compost bin. It replaced a metal crock that I had had for seven years before it finally rusted through the bottom. I was skeptical because of the holes in the top, but the odor does get trapped in the filter. Fruit flies do not breed there either. The container is the problem. It scratches my corian countertop when moved from its resting place under the cabinet to the front of the work space to deposit scraps. Also, the handle falls off when least expected, being noisy, sometimes making it spill, but worse, it is going to accidently fall and break.

The composter sits just above my kitchen sink - ready for work.
It's attractive, doesn't smell, easy to clean, and I can take the lid off with one hand which is handy because ny other had is already full of scraps when I go to dispose of them.
The handle comes off easily, which is both a plus and minus. Usually I like that feature since it makes cleaning easy. But on my first composter of this style, I accidentally caught the handle on a door handle and it slipped off before I could undo my exit. The bottom slipped and broke.
Perhaps a handle with a spring release could provide the ultimate solution.

Last summer I finally replaced several plastic ice cream totes with this beautiful, white, ceramic crock. It fits nicely on my countertop next to the sink. It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for me to fill it completely (and it is totally stuffed as I do have a tendency to push quite a bit of scraps into it)!! Then I simply take the entire biodegradable bag out to the composter (or, in the winter, to the kitty litter container in the garage). My only concern was that the bags, being biodegradable, would disintegrate and make a mess. However, this turned out to be no problem (the bags do leak a little into the crock, but did not break open, even when I have to forcefully pull them from the crock due to overstuffing)!! I really love the contemporary, farm look of the crock and feel that it was well worth the money spent. I have not had any problem with it chipping (I empty it and soak it with bleach every time I change the bag). My only complaint is that the filters are fairly expensive so I only change them every second or third emptying. I have even washed them with bleach when changing, however, this tends to shrink them a bit causing them to slip out of the lid. I have never noticed any foul odor from my crock.

I got this as a Christmas present and it only took 3 months to break. The stupid handle is removable and the crock is ceramic. Gee, I wonder what's going to happen. Yep, I was carrying it out to the compost bin, the handle fell off, and the crock is now in a dozen pieces.

Nice ceramic pot with carbon filter in the lid. Works great keeping the smell of garbage out of the kitchen. I also purchased the 5-gal green bucket with the sealed lid to collect compost items in the garage until ready for the compost barrel.

I have been wanting one for a while, and just last saturday, my birthday, my mother in law got me one in white. I love it, it looks great on my counter top, it is the right size and I cannot smell a thing.

We've long wanted to take advantage of the kitchen waste suitable for composting. The Crock Pot, The bags, the Filters and the thermometer gave us a "Kit" providing all that we need. Now, not only can we feel good about going "Green", we'll have the best food imaginable for our garden.
                                    Thanks,
