    Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

These are great to keep container plants watered when you don't have time to go around watering daily. I use them outdoors, but would work indoors as well. I like the way they adjust to fit inside the pots, so dirt doesn't drop down. I like the adjustable spout for filling with water. I find my plants still like a drink from above, as there is no wick.

      Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

the product fit great in the pot I used it in. however the plants I put in the pot didn't have deep enough roots so I find myself watering some extra from the top of the soil. It was lightweight and a great product

        Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

This is a terrific help to maintain moisture level in outdoor containers. I wish it had a wick or wicks--the directions say you must still water from above until roots grow down to the reservoir. I found that the soil does dry out fairly quickly in the upper level--like a regular pot does. Adjustable size design makes it convenient for numerous pot sizes.

I grow potted herbs on our west facing balony, and the self-watering adapter I bought last year worked out so well in one of my ceramic pots, I bought another one this year. (I also have several of Gardeners Supply's plastic self-watering planters.) Reduces watering chores and is a plant lifesaver when we travel!

              Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I bought these conversion kits a year ago and it makes watering my plants a breeze. I received one of those gift planters with 6 different house plants in the same pot. I divided them into 6 pots, each with one of these kits. The directions indicate using a soilless mix, which I highly recommend because I needed to find bigger pots to accommodate both the plant and the soil (the soil itself is practically weightless). I have used this mix for years, before it became popular, and it works great. You can buy it premixed or make your own (just google it). It's important to keep watering plants as normal until the roots make their way to the bottom. Most of my plants reached down fairly quickly after adjusting to the repotting, a couple of months maybe, while one of them has been planted for about 7 months and has still not figured it out.
What has been absolutely fascinating is that one plant likes a lot of water and I have found that the soil is ALWAYS wet. Others like to be a little dryer, and the soil stays relatively dry. I worried about this one plant being wet all the time, but it's growing like crazy and the leaves are huge and colorful. I'm wondering if a regular planting soil would work in the same way - not going to try it.
I've read some of the negative reviews and have some recommendations. The directions are easy to follow, but you have to read them CAREFULLY and follow them exactly. As far as the corks at the bottom of the water level indicator, if they don't work just stick a piece of styrofoam on the end. It DOES take time for the roots to find their way down, so these work best for houseplants. I would also think that starting with a young plant with not a big root system would work better.

Great product! Use it at our lake house. We're only there on weekends, but I still wanted some potted flowers. I water once a week and don't have to worry about my plants drying out. I deducted a star because they don't come with assembly instructions.

                  Cons

                  • Flimsy

                  Best Uses

                    Comments about Self-Watering Conversion Kits:

I bought these to use in my potted tomato and pepper plants. Even when they have water in them, the plant looks terrible, still needs top watering. The roots of the plants do not seem to be able to get water from the reservoir as informed they will. Will not use again. They are also very flimsy. After filling the tube and trying to get the cap to stay closed, if you put any push on the cap to close, it pops through the bottom section.
