Shade Netting Extends Salad Season into the Heat of Summer

  • Protects lettuce and other cool-weather crops in hot weather or warm climates
  • Also protects plants from birds
  • Choice of two lengths

Just one day of hot summer sun can affect the lush, sweet flavor of homegrown lettuce, making it bitter; a few days of hot sun will make lettuce bolt to seed, ruining it for the season. These UV-stabilized polyethylene shade nets cut summer sun by 50%, while allowing cool air to circulate freely. Use with hoops and clothespins, sold separately.

  • UV-stabilized polyethylene
  • 50% light transmission
  • Made in Canada

      Comments about Shade Nets:

By using this product, we have extended our growing season...arugula still going strong through July in Louisville, KY. We can cut to size, use clothespins to affix it to low or tall hoops, even draped it over our sugar snap peas....made a big difference!

      Comments about Shade Nets:

I have it draped over PVC hoops our "salad garden" and our greens are doing great here even with the intense sun and heat. It is near the end of June we are eating a variety of greens from this garden on a daily basis.

I only wish is came in wider widths - at least 8 foot wide.

Great for covering lettuce, carrot seedlings and other tender plants. My beet seedlings are finally coming up after covering with this. The hot weather was too much for them.

Our intense sun in the NM high desert was too much for our newly planted Japanese maple. We used PVC pipe for poles and used this shade cloth and the tree is doing much better.

                  Comments about Shade Nets:

In a boxed raised bed, I have sugar snap peas growing on a 6' trellis, with lettuce and spinach in front of that. All was growing fine until we had a warm week in May (above 80 degrees). The lettuce and spinach bolted and the peas stopped flowering. So I replanted new lettuce and spinach starts. I draped one 6'x6' shade cloth over the peas and another over plastic hoops to cover the lettuce and spinach and the bottom half of the peas. I clipped the two cloths together with clothes pins to keep them in place. It is now July 1 and the temperature has been 96-98 degrees every day for the past week! I am just amazed that everything is thriving....I'm harvesting peas everyday and the lettuce is growing nicely. No signs of heat stress at all. This shade cloth certainly does what it is supposed to do...it is saving my cool weather crops and extending the season in my garden. It's no problem watering through the cloth and it is lightweight enough to partially remove to easily harvest my vegies.
