We purchased our raised bed planters last year and this is the second year growing food in them. Thought it was about time I did a review. Yes, we get compliments on how good they look, but the main thing for me is, our veggies grow well in them. My wife and I live in a mobile home community that (thankfully) allows veg. gardening in your yard... so long as you try to keep it tidy and attractive. The elevated grow beds are a great help in that respect.

Also, important to us is that the planters are just the right height to allow "stand up/no stoop" gardening. Very easy on the back.

Growing results: Currently, the 2x2 bed (see picture) is planted with one Patty Pan squash and one Crimson Sweet watermelon. In just 14 days the melon grew from the size of a small green olive to 5 inches in diameter. That growth rate, for something growing in a raised bed planter, is amazing to me.

Mulching: Our July/August temperatures reach the 90's and beyond. Therefore I apply a 2 inch layer of mulch to every bed. This slows down evaporation/water loss in the soil. Without mulching I'd have to water a lot more often than I do now, and the plants would probably suffer undue stress.

We applied a good deck stain to protect the outside of the grow beds. On the inside, I used a non-toxic sealer called "Soy Seal Wood Sealer & Waterproofer". You can find it on the internet. I have been quite satisfied with the product.

We also garden in 3 other Gardener's 2x8 raised beds with good results. That will be a separate review.

I needed something to go over my electric box by my pool. This raised bed was perfect, as it has the floor about 12 inches down, and then a few feet of clearance under that. I was able to set the bed over the electric box, and not only protect the electric, but beautify my pool area! So far the cedar is holding up well and my plants are happy.

              • Patio Planting

Got 2 of these 18 months ago. Finally set up after my condo spent more than year redoing patio, and with it needed approval for any planters, and they needed to be movable.

I added casters--would be fantastic if these came with a caster option. I bought 12"x12" wooden planter bases with 4 casters each, 3 of these per planter, cut slices with two casters each and screwed them to the corners and middle of the planter. They roll (and rock).

The patio I have is blazing hot, and things dry out very fast. To keep more mass, I lowered the false bottoms in the planter. This is easy to do. Just remove screws in the steel slats holding the sides together where you want the bottom, and then screw the bottom supports in at that point, and use the removed screws in the holes that were originally intended for the bottom support. Everything is lined up so it works perfectly. I went down to the level just above the vents--about as much as you can do given the vents, but adds another 6 inches of soil depth or so.

It takes a lot of potting soil to fill these. Here's a hint, especially if you have lowered the bottoms. Rip up the cardboard box the planters came in, or other cardboard or newspapers you have around the house, and put them in the bottom, then fill with soil. Cardboard will compost over time, and probably settle a bit, and eventually you may need to add more soil, but it fills the space a bit, and better than adding to the landfill.

My condo assoc. was also freaked out about soil getting on the patio and clogging drainage. I got a roll of 36 inch wide landscape fabric-water goes through but soil doesn't, and stapled it across the bottom and up the sides.

Especially with the extra space, and needing to move these I worried about the weight. So I got bags of the usual potting soil, but went on-line and found large bags of vermicullite--I added 2 bags, 4 cubic ft each, to the potting soil. Found them for about $28 per bag.

I worried a bit about the fact that at 8 feet long, the 1 inch side boards might bulge out over time with weight of the soil. I screwed in some eyehooks in the middle of the top board on both sides and used plastic coated wire to tie them together to compensate for the force of the soil--do this ideally before you fill with soil.

I also mixed in a lot of the soil moist water granules that hold water, and organic fertilizer.

I'm ready to plant after 18 months of these sticking out from under my bed.

I'd like these to remain the bright cedar color. I saw the natural wood protector product in the catalog and was about to order it, but I read reviews and all talked about it immediately turning the wood a soft grey. That would be okay I guess, but I would really like a product that kept them with the new-wood look. Guess I will check out some of the oil finish products for wood patio furniture.

Now how many seasons of tomatoes will it take to "pay for" the cost of the planters, soil, ....I will have to be reimbursed with the pleasure of gardening, and these are a great way to do it if like me you are in a condo with only a small patio space.

The planter is beautiful and I love not having to hunch over the garden bed. I had the gardener put it together, so I can't attest to it's ease of assembly.
