Grand Prize

By Charles Hurmence, Warwick, N.Y.
Using four windowboxes and a carefully chosen selection of plants, Charles was able to transform the front of his house.

"This spring we purchased five self-watering windowboxes for our front porches. Using Gardener's Supply Container Mix, we planted lobelia (Laguna White), New Guinea impatiens (Super Sonic Coral Ice), dichondra (Silver Falls), torenia (Purple Moon), tricolor ipomoea (Ipomoea batatas), bacopa (Mega White), rosebud impatiens (Purple Magic) and assorted coleus. After planting, the boxes were fertilized every two to three weeks with liquid plant food. The self-watering boxes allowed us to water far less frequently than traditional boxes."

By Suzanne Dandeneau, Denver, Colo.
"It has been nearly impossible to sustain a healthy windowbox in my downtown Denver townhouse location. The dryness is brutal and by Aug. 1, most gardeners here usually just give up. This year I used the self-watering planter. I just dropped it into the 'POA-mandated' windowbox. Voila! My success this year is nothing short of miraculous!

"The windowbox did so well that I felt bad having to dismantle it for the winter. It was the best in our whole complex. Well, with the exception of my next door neighbor, who used one of your self-watering boxes, too."

By Molly H. Jordan, Richmond, Va.
"These boxes are on the street front of the house. They answered a difficult question of how to add curb appeal to my house. Yours were the only ones I found in my long search to be reasonably priced, cleverly constructed, fairly easy to install— and with the added bonus of being self-watering. The impatiens, swedish and varigated ivy, asparagus ferns, and begonias are thriving. I love the fact that your boxes are so easy to maintain."

Linda Hughes, Warren, Mich.
"Here is a windowbox that graces the backyard. I'm so pleased that the flowers continue to bloom and flourish even in the hot August weather."
