First Place-Winning photo by Annette Heimlich of Baltimore, Md.

We received many terrific customer photos of our Self-Watering Windowbox. Thanks to everyone who entered this year's contest. It was fun to see all the creative combinations of color and foliage.

Like most of the photos we received, Annette Heimlich’s self-watering windowbox is so packed with healthy flowers that you can’t even see the planter underneath.

First Prize

Here’s what Annette wrote about her winning entry:

"This windowbox is off my kitchen window, which gets lots of afternoon sun. Having this type of container has made it much easier to water. I just fill it with the sprayer from the kitchen sink! I have had the best flower display this year."

We sent Annette a $300 gift certificate to our catalog, and also awarded three $100 gift certificates to: Carol Tata of Au Gres, Mich.; Adelle Hack of New Haven, Ct. and Corliss Wheaton of Oneida, N.Y.

"I used lantana, white geraniums, yellow pansies, vineing black eyed susan and some other vining white plant I don't know the name of. You can't even see the windowbox any longer. It sits on the bench on my front porch, which receives light from the south. I keep the reservoir filled. I would highly recommend the self-watering containers to anyone. It only needed water about every two weeks when I first planted the flowers Memorial Day weekend. It requires water every four days or so when the weather is in the 80s, 90s, etc."

"I have used: Coleus 'Garnet Robe', Plectranthus 'Green on Green', Begonia 'Dragon Wing', English ivy, Lysimachia aurea, and Ipomoea 'Blackie'. The most difficult challenge was trying to keep these thriving specimens in check so that I could turn the windowbox every now and again. One side of the box gets full sun and the other side receives only a brief period of early morning sun. Rotating the box enables it to look great from every vantage point!"

"I spent hours thinking what to put in it. The plants I chose require moderate care."
