I have another similar feeder that I bought at my local hardware store that I had to modify to make it truly squirrel proof. This one is a bit more expensive, but well worth it. It's more durable and squirrel proof right out of the box.

Bought this as a birthday present for my sister who lives in Maine. She had stopped putting out bird seed this Spring because the squirrels were eating it all. Not a problem now. She hung the feeder in a tree and no longer has a problem. There are small squirrels in Maine compared to Texas so she set it at a two and says it is wonderful. Everyone is happy except the squirrels.

While the Absolute Feeder became a favorite of several cardinals, after a few weeks, the squirrels soon broke through Fort Knox! The squirrels would either access the feeder tray from above avoiding standing on the tray, or access from the side of the tray.

I have purchased "squirrelproof" feeders in the past that were destroyed within weeks. This is the first and only feeder that has confounded the aggressive squirrel population in my yard. The best thing is, small birds that were frightened away in the past are now congregating on this feeder because the squirrels can't get to them. And because the feeder holds so much food, I don't have to refill so often.
