Shade Netting Extends Salad Season into the Heat of Summer

  • Protects lettuce and other cool-weather crops in hot weather or warm climates
  • Also protects plants from birds
  • Choice of two lengths

Just one day of hot summer sun can affect the lush, sweet flavor of homegrown lettuce, making it bitter; a few days of hot sun will make lettuce bolt to seed, ruining it for the season. These UV-stabilized polyethylene shade net cut summer sun by 50%, while allowing cool air to circulate freely. Use with hoops and clothespins, sold separately.

  • UV-stabilized polyethylene
  • 50% light transmission
  • Made in Canada

Comments about Shade Nets:

The shade net is used out at the Appalachian Mountain Club Fire Island Cabin to shade lettuce and other crops for the summer season. It works perfectly. We got one last year and another this year and harvest plenty. Kudos to the staff of Gardeners Supply. The island (and garden) were wrecked by Storm Sandy. I called with problem after problem and the staff spent hours with me and together we came up with solutions. The members say we have the best garden ever. Thanks so much.

    Comments about Shade Nets:

Daytime temperatures rose quickly this spring in the area where we live. I was concerned about my spinach and lettuce getting too much sun. So, I placed a shade net over some super hoops that I had to reduce the sunlight. Both crops are thriving. Time will tell if the shade net will allow the crops to grow through the summer heat.

      Comments about Shade Nets:

I needed a shade screen to shade our vegetables from the harsh Arizona summer sun. Even though it's not yet summer, the plants have already shown they love the added protection. They are flourishing!!

      Comments about Shade Nets:

25 years ago I bought some shade cloth from here to protect lettuce from the heat and am still using it. I had to order some more because I gave a chunk of it to a close gardening friend and wasn't going to have enough left to use over hoops to shield my seedlings when I first move the flats out to acclimate them to the real world. It does wonders - last summer I even managed to protect a couple of heads of decent-tasting lettuce until my first tomato got ripe. My only complaint is that I wish it came in lengths other than 6' or 12' - maybe 8', 24' and 48'.

          Comments about Shade Nets:

Great for growing lettuce mid-summer. We've always been frustrated that by the time our tomatoes come in, the lettuce has bolted. Now we've got sweet mid-summer lettuce in abundance, grown under the shade of this mesh.

                  Comments about Shade Nets:

This netting worked well to shade my hosta from the hot Colorado sun. It is not the most attractive thing in the garden, but then I really shouldn't be planting hosta in Colorado. This netting did very nicely shade the plants and kept them alive and well.
The netting was also easy to work with and cut into sections.

                    Comments about Shade Nets:

I used this over the tall or 'Hi-Rise' hoops to create some shade for my bell peppers & eggplant. We get pretty hot here in the central valley of California & often food is fried before it's picked. :-( Not with this. This shade cover has provided a nice little bit of shade & the plants are thriving very happily under it. It was easy for me to handle on my own even though it can cover nearly the entire raised bed. I just used some clothes pins to fasten it to the hoops because we can get some pretty strong winds. No problems with keeping it where it belongs. I'll probably order another one for next year's garden.I highly recommend this shade cloth to anyone needing a bit of shade for their plants.

Love the product and it's function, would like to see it made in a larger size. i.e. 12X12, 12X14, etc. Helps keep sun damage down on tomatoes, lettuce, cukes, melons, etc.

                      Comments about Shade Nets:

I have two Tomatoe Success Kit planters with 2 Better Boy tomatoes in each them. With the hot, extremely dry weather this summer I got a set of the Super Hoops, attached them to the top of the tomatoe support cages and put the shade net over the top. It has really made a big difference and have had no sun scalds this year. Plants are doing fabulous despite the weather.
