Exclusive | Bountiful Salad Greens Right on Your Doorstep — with Grow Bags

  • Grow fresh salad greens anywhere
  • Made from patented, double-layer polypropylene that lets roots breathe
  • Grow Bags make the most of limited space and fold flat for off-season storage
  • Shown with the Self-Watering Tray, sold separately

For years now, gardeners in England have made the most of very limited garden space by growing vegetables, greens and herbs in plastic bags placed on steps, patios and landings. We’ve made improvements and achieved terrific results — and you will, too! First, our Salad Grow Bags are made of patented, double-layer polypropylene instead of sheet plastic. This felt-like fabric breaths better, so your plants won’t suffer from heat build-up, overwatering, or poor aeration. Plus, our fabric air prunes plant roots, resulting in a strong, healthy root system. We’ve developed a Grow Bag for many popular crops — shallow for salads, deep for tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. That means less planting mix to buy and better results.

  • Patented two-layer, BPA-free polypropylene fabric
  • 14-1/2" W x 21-1/2" L x 5" H
  • Holds 35 quarts of planting mix
  • Made in USA

I'm growing lettuce

By Caroline

Pros

  • Convenient

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Growing Microgreens

I have this lettuce grow bag full of dirt & plants sitting on the self-waterer. The self-waterer is much more study than the ones you'll purchase at the big box stores. Currently, this set-up is working well however, I don't know how long the bag will last as it is made of a rather thin felt-like fabric.

This product together with the watering tray produced the most productive lettuce all season. It worked so much better then planting the lettuce in the ground. I recommend this product to everyone!

    Great Idea

    By Island Gardener

    Pros

    • Handy location on deck
    • Lightweight and portable
    • Stays moist between rains

    Cons

    • Sidewalls a bit flimsy

    Best Uses

I planted two different types of lettuce in my salad grow bag. I thought the soil was going to spill out over the flexible sidewalls, but that wasn't the case. The soil stayed put and the walls really weren't a problem. I like that it's so handy--I can just step out on the deck and pick a salad! I really like the tray that you can get to put beneath the grow bag. It keeps the deck surface clean and helps to keep the greens moist between rains.

I LOVE These Lettuce Grow Bags!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased a few of these "salad bags" last year in the "Poppy" color. I had never grown in fabric bags before, and, from what I understand, plants are supposed to grow better in them vs. standard pots, due to the aeration provided by the poracity of the fabric. Curiosity led me to do a side-by-side comparison of these pots against my regular plastic pots.

I have some standing rectangular planters that have a shelf on the bottom, and these grow bags fit on the shelving PERFECTLY. Their malleability and low profile allowed for a perfect fit under the planters. I filled each one with a mixture of good quality potting soil, compost, and worm castings. I scattered lettuce seeds on the soil surfaces, and lightly covered with soil. Within a few weeks - I had the most gorgeous and healthy lettuce bursting out of these bags! Interestingly enough, I grew bigger and more robust lettuce in these grow bags than in my plastic pots. The only reason I can think this happened is that the regular plastic pots got VERY hot in the summer sun - they also RETAINED more heat. Lettuce does not like to be hot at all.

Yes, these are fabric bags, and can somewhat bow out on the sides after being filled with soil, but that's what I like about them. Because of the flexibility of the fabric, you can squeeze together as many as you need, or get into difficult spaces with ease. One could also use these bags to line planters or the insides of cache pots. Naturally, you wouldn't want to place these directly atop anything made of wood, as they are porous. The only con I can think of is that they need to be washed each year. I just use water and a very mild dish soap, and allow them to air dry in the sun.

There is no need to limit yourself to growing only lettuces with these bags! They are great for growing shallots, swiss chard, kale, herbs, nasturtiums, petunias - just about anything that doesn't have a really deep root system.

The bright and cheerful poppy color was just the splash of color my deck needed. I'll be buying several more (this time, in blue)for a friend who loves mine.

Thank you, Gardener's Supply! Please don't ever take these away :)
