Red Tomato Mulch Increases Tomato Harvest by Up to 20%

  • University-tested mulch improves yield and flavor of your tomatoes
  • Also warms soil and conserves moisture
  • Micro-perforations allow water, air and nutrients to reach the soil

The product that started the "red revolution," this remarkable red mulch helps tomato plants grow faster and produce more abundant crops. Developed jointly by the USDA and Clemson University, and proven effective in tests by a leading consumer magazine, this specially engineered red mulch reflects far-red light wavelengths upward into your tomato plants. This triggers the release of a natural plant protein that stimulates more rapid growth and development. Your plants will mature faster, look bushier, and give you a more flavorful, more abundant harvest than ever before. Also may be used with strawberries, melons, red peppers and other crops that fruit above ground. Micro-perforations allow water, air and nutrients to reach the soil surface. Not designed for weed suppression. 24' L x 3' W. Easy to anchor with Earth Staples, sold separately.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

I have had red mulch for a few years and wanted to get more for my growing number of tomato plants. The roll seemed like a good idea at the time of order and shipped nice and easy- but when it came time to lay it down in a light breeze, by myself- well, that was not so easy. I also found that the perforations resulted in weeds growing up and around the edges of the red mulch. For northern gardens, this might just be a take it or leave it, depending on the growing conditions you have.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

I previously replied that it was too early to judge and we had been searching for this item for many years. Now that we have produce in production, this item is great! We raise our produce in an 8'x16' raised bed. We turn over soil annually before planting, and add (homemade) compost and minimum vegetable fertilizer before planting. We never have weeds. We install 6 drip line irrigators, and then plant our crops near these lines. Our annual production is excellent, and we have too much, so we give the excess away. When we found the Red Tomato Mulch, we already decided to have fewer plants. We stretched the material out as far as it would go. We planted tomato plants, basil, chilies, bell peppers, cucumbers, and zucchini (and marigolds to keep the bugs away). A volunteer cantaloupe showed up. We had fewer plants than normal, other than basil, which we used as a control to see if those planted outside the mulch area would be as productive as those inside. The mulch grown plants all produced, and are producing, at an exceptional rate. I've had to cut back some (tomato plants over 6' tall). Volunteer tomato, and cantaloupe plants we had in the non-mulch area, along with those basils are not quite as productive. Due to our elevation, planting is late, as is production. We usually start giving things away in late September. We started off-loading the second week of August. All of our mulch grown plants are more productive than previously, and we have reduced our water use. More produce; fewer plants; less irrigation. Fantastic!

This was the first time I used this product, and I am the only one using it in our Community Garden which hosts about 100 small plots. I used the red mulch as suggested, laying it on the prepared bed, and planted 8 (grafted tomato plants) right on the plastic. I am very happy with the results, I have larger, cleaner. healthier plants, and many many times more tomatoes than I have had in the past. The picture is of the tomatoes I picked in one day!

I was looking for Red Plastic Mulch for my Tomato's, Strawberries and more, and im so glad i found it here. This stuff is great, I cut a large square of it , cut a medium-sized-plate-sized hole in the center (where the Tomato is) set it at the spot i planted the tomato, and its kept down with the Tomato Cage being stabbed into it. I like that it has the perforations pre-put in, though i have no experimented and seen how much water goes through them.

I have used red mulch for a few years now with my tomato and pepper plants. Since using the product, my produce has increased substantially. I only wish it would eliminate the weeds also, that would make it even easier for me.

Too early to tell. I have been looking for this product ever since it was first reported by the Univ. of Wisconsin ( I think), about 10 years ago. After 3 weeks all our veggies (tomato, bell peppers, chilie peppers, cucumber, zucchini, basil) are looking good in some overly hot weather. I will respond once the plants start producing. I anticipate something better than normal (which is usually pretty good), as the research indicated.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

It was a waste of money for me!

I bought this to use in large, round, soft-sided containers containing inteterminate heirloom tomatoes and tomato ladders. I was concerned my patio wouldn't get enough direct sunlight during the day and thought this might help reflect the sun it did get.

The red plastic tomato mulch didn't work for me. The biggest problem was that I found it very difficult to use!

Since tomatoes must be planted deep (and some advise horizontally), it was difficult to follow the instructions that suggested first laying down the plastic. It just didn't work. So first I planted the seedling in the container, then tried to cut/lay the plastic around the plant securing it with gardening staples (careful to leave space around the vine itself). I then placed the tomato ladder and poked a bunch of holes in the plastic to allow for watering.

This was all very cumbersome and didn't seem to work well so I only used it in one container. It is always frustrating to water and difficult to fertilize - both of which must be done more frequently since I'm growing in containers. I am about to pull up the plastic and replace it with the same straw that I'm using in my other containers. I see straw recommended often by other gardeners. It helps to provide nutrients to the soil. I think "oat" straw is better than "wheat" straw if you can get it. But try to find old straw or let it sit out or you may start growing some of your own in the container which competes with your plants for nutrients. I hear dried pine needles are also great.

I don't see any difference in growth between the container with the red plastic mulch and the other containers with straw mulch.

The only benefit I can see is that weeds haven't grown.

In conclusion, if you're not using this in a garden bed of some sort that is conducive to laying down sheets of plastic before planting, save your money!

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

This is the third year of using the mulch. While I haven't done any controlled studies (i.e. used the mulch on one plant and not used it on another), my three plants - Early Girl and Better Boy - produced 700 flavorful tomatoes the first year I used it. The plants were strong and required tomato towers to 6 feet to hold them up. I'm new to growing tomatoes and got lucky with a good garden spot, but I don't think I would have gotten this yield without the red plastic mulch.
