The prongs attached to the back of the pieces are large and dull so you have to push fairly hard on small pumpkins. If you goof, it leaves holes ( larger than a match head). I also used these on styrofoam pumpkins and gourds. I found it's easier to apply the feet first to get good balance before inserting the eyes. Be sure the piece feels balanced before inserting the eyes and that the eyes are looking the direction you want them in the area they will be displayed.
