Compost Indoors

By Ann

Pros

  • Energy efficient
  • Odor free
  • Quiet Except 4 Turning

Cons

  • Can't Handle Brassicas
  • Some Extra Work Req'd

Best Uses

We have now had this (smallest) unit in our kitchen for 1 full year. Initial start-up took some learning & time, but it has worked very well for scraps from a 2-person household (approx 7 cups/week of finely cut scrap is accummulated over the week in a countertop air tight bin and added to the NM all at once). Every weekend a silcone scraper is used to mix up the contents of bottom container and scrape down the sides of the top container before adding the new material along with 1 cup wood pellets (pet store bedding) and NaHCO3 - I rarely need to "dump" from top to bottom as this happens slowly & automatically over the week. When bottom is full (2-3 weeks) I add to my outdoor compost pile, but plan to add directly to may garden this spring.
Others have mentioned troubles with the flaps - I believe this issue depends on the weight of scrap material added - if you put in small quantities of scrap as generated, the weight of scrap is insuffient to hold the flaps closed during turning, so its best to amass a good quantity and limit the number of times you go into the unit.
I do wish it could process Citrus and Brassica waste because we eat lots, but most other compost can not handle any dairy, meat or fish! Very happy with this purchase!

I reviewed this machine when I had only used it about a month. I rated it high as it worked so well for awhile. But within another month the mixing fins started staying wide open and the contents fell into the transfer bin half composted. I took the contents out and put them back in the top but again the fins stayed open after one cycle and everything fell through.

Gardeners Supply replaced the unit but the new one started doing the same thing within days. The fins stuck open, the contents fell through and nothing was composted enough to use. We had been extremely careful with this new one, cutting everything up into tiny pieces before putting it in the composter.

I sent an email to Nature Mill asking for a partial refund as the machine was still way under warranty. They refused because I had purchased it from GS. They only honor the warranty if you buy from them. Their explanation stated others had had that problem but I should just forget about the fins and let everything drop down into the transfer bin to compost. Well, it has been well over a month and all the compost is sitting in the bin covered with mold and still in a semi-solid state and unusable as is. And yes, the fins are still wide open. Hmmm, why are they even there?

This is a great idea that just has very poor design. Don't waste your money.

      • Sitting in a landfill

First one lasted 3 weeks before it cracked right down the middle. Called the company and they wanted me to send it back and wait 4-6 weeks for a replacement. Called Gardner's Supply and they immediately sent me out a brand new unit and didn't want the old one back for sanitary reasons. Unfortunately, this led to the first unit and it's foam construction to be tossed in a landfill. Kind of ruins the whole environmental feel-good part of composting.

Second unit has lasted 6 months and makes compost. However, whenever I push the transfer button, nothing transfers. I need to reach my hand in the unit and pop the trapdoors open with a screwdriver then manually push the compost towards the trap doors while the mixing bar rotates. I end up with very dirty hands.

The new unit now makes loud clicking noises when it mixes and I'm watching the seams bend and stress again. Looks like this one will crack in half any day now.

Gardner's Supply is a great company. For the sake of their own reputation, they should stop carrying this defective product.

I gave this composter a good review when I first purchased it but I must change that now. The composter really does work but only for a few months before it starts to fall apart. I took great care of the composter, kept it in my kitchen and followed directions scrupulously. The design is great; the materials the unit is made out of are not. Nature Mill uses what looks like compressed styrofoam and it simply is not strong enough to hold the electric motor and air pump in place. The electric motor that turns the mixing arm starts to twist in it's slot which then puts pressure on the air pump causing it to get louder and louder. Meanwhile the pressure from the twisting arm also starts the process of splitting the entire unit in half.

Gardeners was fantastic for replacing the first composter. I have absolutely babied the replacement yet it is still doing the same darn thing. You can't keep the motor from twisting in it's place. I have tried replacing the worthless little metal strips that are supposed to hold it in place to no avail. I even tried using metal C-clamps to hold the composter together.

Bottom line - composter works but until Nature Mill reinforces the back of the machine where the motor and pump are, don't waste your money. The unit will break on you no matter what you do.

I was in the market for a compost bin and saw this in the catalog. Wow, really expensive. But with delayed interest free payments I could swing it. Am I ever glad I made that decision. All the kitchen garbage including left over meat get put in the kitchen compost jar. When it is full all goes out to the composter we keep on a small table in the garage. This small but mighty unit heats and churns up the garbage and turns it into compost that goes out to the garden. All in a weeks time. I'm in love.

I originally ordered an outdoor compost tumbler which was discontinued. Norman from Gardener's Supply called to update me on the status of my order and mentioned the electric composter which he had tested for three months. Initially,I was hesitant because of the price but since I had a gift certificate, the price was reduced enough for me give it a try. I am so pleased that I did because this composter really does what it is supposed to do and produces excellent compost within two weeks.

Some suggestions to consider if you plan to go with this composter.
        1. There is a learning process so follow the written directions scrupulously. Especially add the wooden pellets and baking soda (included with the order) to each large deposit. The pellets make a big difference to insure the compost stays dry and you avoid compost "tea."
        2. Put a large pan under the composter. I use an old cafeteria tray but a cookie sheet will do. I have a tendency to spill scraps when dumping into the composter or pulling out the lower chamber where the compost cooks.
        3. I placed the composter in the garage which is convenient to both the kitchen and outside. It does not take up much space and is relatively quiet.
        4. Within one day, fresh scraps are broken down and the compost is starting to steam. Within a week, I make a transfer and by the second week, I have lovely compost to place in the garden.

The process is efficient and so much easier than using my outdoor compost bins......which I have been doing for 25 years. Despite the cost, I would highly recommend this product. It works and the compost is perfect.

        Issues with Nature Mill

        By Howard Mayne

        from Lee, NH

        Pros

          Cons

            Best Uses

My family has purchased perhaps six or seven Nature Mill composters. At first, they work superbly, and the rich, black compost is a delight to behold.

However, after 3-4 months of use, the composter will inevitably break down. The doors will jam, or the stirrer bar will break down, or the frame will split. Rather than acknowledge their poor engineering, and ship you a new unit, Nature Mill will have you mail the broken unit back to them (at your own expense), and (a mere 6-8 weeks later) will send you a jerry-rigged "repaired" unit back. This will have all sorts of issues. You will then engage with their support staff, who will treat you with condescension, and suggest that you are an incompetent composter, rather than admit their product's mechanical flaws.

Reluctantly (since I am an avid composter) I must caution against dealing with Nature Mill.

Had been researching composters for quite a while. With an expansion of our graden this year decided to take the plunge. Living in NE was drawn to this product due to the remarkably quick production of compost. Have placed the unit in my cellar by request of my wife, but have been surprised at how quite it is unless it's running the mixing arm or dropping the compost into the bin below. It seems to be dumping without me initiating the process, but so far have only had to take a small amount of uncomposted material and place it back up into the main chamber. So far have been very happy with the purchase.

This product is not as simple to use as the videos and descriptions imply. After using this for several weeks I am still making sludge, not compost. After a few days it did quiet down quite a bit and when closed is not smelly.

I can get a batch of compost in less than a week even in the winter. I have 6 compost bins outside but they are out of commission when it's cold! I'm going to get rid of my worm bin now. This is so much easier and faster. I love this thing and if it breaks, I will buy another one. Pretty pricey though. I was able to buy it by making payments. Thanks for making that available for your high cost items you carry.
