We added a small waterfall feature to our garden this year and the mini barley bale cleared up the green scum that was accumulating within weeks. It causes it to sort of cling together so it can be scooped and removed much easier. Highly recommend this as a natural bird & wildlife friendly solution for clear water!!
By the way we are keeping our water feature open this winter with a 250 watt farm bucket heater. So far so good.

I bought this to control the algea on or pond, I think it helped a little with the string kind but there is still a lot of other kinds, I was surprised at how fast the bails become water logged and sink, then it takes a day to dry them out.

I used the barley bales in my 600 gallon pond to help keep the water clear. I am not sure if they truly didn't work or if the weather was too huge a factor to overcome. My pond had a huge algae bloom last month and is just starting to recover.
