This is a very good looking planter. It looks like a wood planter on first glance, but lacks a wood grain finish to carry the illusion further. The planters are solid plastic units, no assembly. But they are big. Beware, it takes 50 quarts of mix. But that volume makes for happy large plants.
I use them for Dwarf Cavendish Banana trees. I started a bit late in the growing season, so instead of bananas I got "pups" from my trees. Each one produced 3-4 new trees. I'll take that trade-off! In addition to the trees I added Basil plants around the base because there is plenty of space.
The planter does not come with the necessary screening cloth to keep the soil out of the reservoir, nor a wicking rope to bring up the moisture. I used two strips of spun landscape fabric to cover the water holes at the bottom. The bottom on the inside is not flat, there are two large but narrow "trenches". This makes it awkward to place any screening material. There is no provision for wicking rope,
The bottom of the planter is flat, no easy way to add casters -I've ordered caster dollies this year for them. Because they are so heavy you will need the dollies to move these when full of soil, as I did last fall to bring my bananas indoors. There is a small hole on the outer side of the planter to drain excess water, which makes it awkward to drain and bring indoors.
The planter lacks a reservoir water indicator, you have to irrigate until water comes out of the small hard to see drain. The lack of the indicator and the caster option is why I dropped this to only 4 stars. Oh, yes while they are pretty, they are expensive. If they go on sale I will buy more for my "pups" but the 4 that I have already take up too much space in my sun room in winter. I'll put the some of the new pups in the garden along with the older plants. I'm expecting to find that trees are root bound, but I have to wait until the last chance of frost passes before I find out.
A planter with a resevoir...that leaks.

Love these planters. Just finished planting them and are now taking them to our summer cottage. They look like what you would have found originally in front of our 1920 cottages--just like wood--in fact people are sure they are wood--even when touched[...]
