We put The Barley Ball in our fish pond toward the end of every winter and find that it really helps keep the spring algae down. It should be taken out and cleaned and refilled sometime during the summer, because if we leave it in the pond, it is difficult to get open again the following year, and messy to clean.

I have used these for over two years. They do clear the water in the pond. Mine is 15' x 20' x 3' deep. Putting the refills in the ball is kinda yucky as it get covered in algae, but I found if you use two towels, one in your lap on one over the ball, it opens easily.

Barley ball does help with the algae in our koi pond waterfall but we did find it hard to re-open the plastic ball at the end of the season.

I have found the barley ball to be the best ,easy product to keep my pond clear.
the only problem is that it gets difficult to change at the end of season, because its slimy and tuning the ball to unlock it is hard
