I tried the APS system this spring in getting my seedlings started. Though I had some success, I won't be using the trays again. Many people have already noted the Styrofoam is flimsy. The edges in particular break off easily, causing soil to spill out. Though I followed the directions exactly and kept the trays' water level between MAX and MIN, I also had a problem with mold growing on top of the soil due to too much water being absorbed through the matting. Some seeds actually rotted in the soil before germinating. Worst of all, these trays are hardly reusable. The seeds that did grow put down extensive roots that grew into and through the matting. Even after drying and washing them, the matting is riddled with organic matter. Everything needs to be thrown away. Gardeners are much better off spending their money on basic trays and dealing with the chore of watering regularly.

My APS seedlings (100% germination under grow lights) are huge compared with the seedlings I started in a traditional seedling tray. The APS system's self-watering feature really works well and makes it easy to care for the seedlings since they can go several days without adding water. Having such large, vigorous seedlings gives me a jump on our short growing season. These results are truly amazing!

This seed starting kit with the germinating mix is the best in the marketplace. I have 100% germination. It is easy to use and minimal care for healthy, robust plants.

It is the perfect way to make Spring come early to our frosty climate. I don't have a lot of time for watering so the low maintenance design helps my seedlings thrive even through my neglect!

I purchased the APS seed starter kit to go along with the 3 tier sun lite garden. That came with the jump start kit but I needed to purchase more material to start the seeds I wanted to start. I do like the APS system but the styrofoam planters break apart easily, especially once the seed starter soil is in and everything is watered.I am concerned that they might not be usable next year. I did not have 100% seed germination but this is my first time doing it and I probably made some mistakes. I did resow seeds that did not germinate and they are doing better the second time around.
I also feel that for the cost, there should be more than 2 APS sets. The additional materials are good, especially the seed starter soil and the water gauges. But, again, I don't know if the materials will survive for another year since I am just starting out.

The units use to have a foam botom that made them very sturdy....wish they still did.

We have started numerous seeds and they are all growing like crazy.....almost too good with all the rain predicted for the next month I am worried about soggy replanting. Time will tell. We will certainly use them again next year.

The tray, germination mix and peg stands are great, however, the water reservoirs came with cracks, so could not be used. The 2 trays I ordered were cracked in same place, so I assume this was a manufacturing defect.
