Biodegradable, Eco-Friendly Cowpots™ for Transplants

  • Completely biodegradable pots make seedstarting easy
  • Transplant seedlings, pot and all, directly into garden, reducing transplant shock
  • Pots add nutrients to the soil as they degrade

Plants thrive in these award-winning biodegradable transplant pots. Cowpots™ are the patent-pending invention of Matt and Ben Freund, two Connecticut dairy farmers who were looking for an environmentally responsible way to dispose of cow manure. The manure is dried, completely composted, mixed with natural fibers, and pressed into pots. Gardeners love Cowpots because they are odorless and free of weed seeds. Plants love Cowpots too, because transplant shock is greatly reduced. Best of all, Cowpots are 100% biodegradable. They last for months in the greenhouse or windowsill, but will dissolve within weeks after planting in the garden, providing essential organic nutrients. We are very excited about Cowpots, and recommend them to any gardener who wants to increase plant health and reduce waste.

                  Comments about Biodegradable Cowpots™:

I started my seeds in 72 cell plastic trays initially. When it was time to transplant them into larger containers, I used cowpots for some and deeproot trays for the rest.

Growing side by side there were obvious differences between those in cowpots and those in the plastic trays.
The ones in cowpots had more problems with drying out and molding and were much smaller than those in the plastic trays. Root development was stronger in the plastic trays too.
I didn't see any advantages to using the cowpots and many for using the plastic which can be reused for many years.

I peeled off the cowpots before setting my transplants into the garden and scattered the cowpot material on the surface of the raised beds. We've had a lot of rain since I planted and most of the cowpot material still looks the same as when I scattered it.

Going forward, I will no longer use cowpots or peat pots for seed starting or transplants. Plastic with good drainage seems to do a much better job and saves money at the same time.

                    Comments about Biodegradable Cowpots™:

I bought the set of 4 six-pack cowpots for starting a variety of seedlings in the house. I also bought the organic seed starting mix to use in the pots. The seedlings, which include lettuce, 3 types of winter squash, sunflowers and coneflowers are doing really well, and some are ready to plant outside now! The cowpots are sitting on foil trays indoors next to the houseplants where they get lots of sun, so there is no elaborate setup here. We are currently installing a kitchen garden in the yard, which will include vegetables and misc. cottage garden annuals/perennials, and it will be easy to add the cowpots either into the ground or the raised beds. The cowpots are organic and provide nutrients for the newly transplanted seedlings to help establish them in the ground. I am relatively new to gardening and this is the first time I've started seeds, but I would buy the cowpots to start seeds again next spring and would recommend them highly to anyone. One thing that I would do differently is order the 3" or slightly larger cowpots for the winter squash, especially the Hubbard--the seedlings are very large. I used Hubbard Squash seeds from the actual squash, and had no idea if or how that would work out!

I use this product to start tomato and pepper seedlings each year. I find that the seeds start well and when it comes time to transplant, it is just a matter of digging the hole and putting the whole product in the ground. I have recommended this product to friends and have given them seedlings that they only have to put in the ground or pot. If kept too long before transplanting the product will eventually deteriorate or fall apart.

Thus far I have transplanted 3 tomato and 3 sweet pepper seedlings. They are currently sitting in a south facing window due to the fact that it does not truly warm up here until June. In fact we just had snow the last couple of days... I hope to transfer some of these plants into bigger planters in a few weeks. Nice to not have plastic pots to recycle and these cowpots will feed the plants after transplant while they decompose.
