2001 Garden Crusader Awards

Gardener's Supply created the the Garden Crusader Award to honor individuals who are using their love of gardening to make a difference in their community. For the first annual award, we received hundreds of nominations. These gardeners are working on a wide variety of wonderful projects in schools, churches neighborhoods and communities.

We were inspired and moved by all of the entries. Here are the five winners for 2001:

Grand Prize
Sean Phelan, Seattle, Wash.

Sean Phelan

Sean began gardening for the same reason most people do: to grow flowers and vegetables. But he soon discovered an even better reason to garden: community.

South Region
Jim Call, Huntsville, Ala.
Jim coordinated a 1/3-acre vegetable garden to help elderly and homebound residents live independently.

East Region
Gloria Luster, Baltimore, Md.
Gloria established the Gardens of Hope on 3 blocks of empty city lots which had been a haven for drug activity.

West Region
Scott Conner, Kirkland, Wash.
For a dozen years, Scott taught organic gardening and composting classes to gardeners in the greater Seattle area.

Midwest Region
Billy Mills, Chamberlain, S.D.
Billy helped launch a gardening program on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
